Verdanté Bioenergy Service’s delivers Phantom 3 Pro to support higher education, research and forest operations.
Verdanté Bioenergy Services’ Founder and President, David Waechter presented Lee Jackson of the NC State Natural Resources Foundation with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional unmanned aerial device (quadcopter) during a visit to the Hofmann Forest in Maysville, NC. The device will allow forest staff and students and researchers in the College of Natural Resources at NC State University to learn how to best apply an emerging geo-spatial imaging technology to forest monitoring and management.
“VBS already supports work at NC State University Extension Forestry aimed at improving understanding and access to forest markets. Our firm is focused on making forest supply chains more reliable and that often means landowners having more knowledge of the forests they own and manage,” stated Waechter.
Dr. Glenn P. Catts, Director of CNR Forest Operations said “This gift complements existing efforts in CNR in the Geo-Spatial Analytics and the Extension Forestry programs.”
Extension Forestry provides unbiased information that enables North Carolinians to make informed decisions concerning the management, enhancement, and enjoyment of their forest and other natural resources through sound, research-based information and education.
Leighton Reid, postdoctoral fellow, Missouri Botanical Garden Center for Conservation and Sustainable Development suggested, “The ability to accurately assess above ground biomass is particularly important, as this suggests that drones could even be used to monitor carbon accumulation in regenerating forests.”

The Annual Pellet Fuel Institute Conference was held July 19 -21 in Williamsburg, Virginia. The meeting highlighted the various applications of densified biomass, as well as trends and best practices within the densified biomass industry. A broad range of individuals from the public and private sectors, academia, and local, state and national governments from North America were the majority of attendees.
With evidence of this growing market, the importance of acquiring quality feedstock has become a focal point. The first general session of PFI’s conference rounded off with a discussion on how to enhance pellet operations, but there was also discussion about the increased focus on standards in the production of pellets for fuel.
One of the highlights of the event was a presentation of a groundbreaking technology coming to the biomass-to-energy sector in the Fall of 2015. David Waechter, founder of Verdante Bioenergy Services, has become recognized as the leading authority on information technology solutions for the biomass-to-energy sector. Waechter joined industry experts on a panel on Tools to Optimize Pellet Manufacturing, where he presented: Feedstock Procurement with Tech-savvy Suppliers.
In the presentation, Waechter spoke of the challenges faced by procurement staff when seeking adequate feedstock for pellet producing facilities.
“We are building this technology for people who are not necessarily in the wood business, but have a need for reliable sources of wood for energy.” Waechter continued, “PFI members are in the wood business, but you still need to know what you’re buying before it shows up at the gate. Being able to push quality control out into the forest, where wood biomass is being harvested will have a tremendous positive effect on your overall procurement strategy.”
Bioenergy ProEX™ is a first-mile solution to increase the transparency and efficiency of biomass transactions. It allows procurement staff at pellet mills, power facilities, and biofuel manufacturers to locate, review data, purchase, schedule and track shipments of biomass such as wood chips or agricultural wastes. It enables buyers and sellers of biomass to have a more efficient settlement process and provides a rating to both buyer and seller. The technology can easily integrate with business management software solutions.
An advanced biofuel production facility’s financial success starts to be determined the moment feedstock begins to be harvested. Profit margins for energy commodities in healthy market conditions are thin, and inefficient feedstock supply chains can quickly erode profitability before conversion even begins. Verdanté Bioenergy Services recognizes the challenges emerging bio-refineries have already faced and overcome.
Waechter speaks about Biomass Supply Chain Management at National Conference
The 8th annual International Biomass Conference & Expo took place April 20-22, 2015, at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This dynamic event unites industry professionals from all sectors of the world’s interconnected biomass utilization industries—biobased power, thermal energy, fuels and chemicals. Attendees came from 48 states and 41 countries to learn more about how the biomass to energy sector is growing and evolving.
David Waechter, Founder of Verdante Bioenergy Services based in Lenoir, NC was one of 4 expert panelist to speak about: Ensuring that Biomass Inputs Satisfy the Requirements of Buyers while Continuing to Deliver their Ecological Benefits. The panel discussed one of the most compelling arguments for the use of biomass as an input for energy products being the environmental services it performs before becoming energy. This value brings a responsibility to the biomass industry of ensuring and proving that the use of biomass for energy inputs doesn’t impinge upon its ability to remain a low-carbon alternative to coal.
Verdanté Bioenergy Services presenting to prospective investors.
Verdanté Bioenergy Services was chosen from 112 applicants to be a finalist in the 2015 Charlotte
Venture Challenge.Their patent-pending technology for improving markets for biomass is gaining the
attention of an increasing list of discerning groups. Bioenergy ProEX™ is the first mile solution to bring
more biomass to market, with better specification, and more reliability. The team at Verdanté brings
technology and support services to the growing biomass sector including state of the art hardware,

procurement and sales.
The Charlotte Venture Challenge is a start-up competition for early-stage high growth companies. The
competition has a history of producing and showcasing some of the Southeast’s most successful earlystage
companies. In the last three years, over 300 start-up companies entered the competition for the
opportunity to present to potential investors, first customers, and win cash prizes.
“Verdanté continues to gather the attention of prospective customers and investors as we grow the
momentum for our flagship technology, Bioenergy ProEX™. We are being recognized for our integrity
and innovation in the biomass-to-energy sector and we are pleased to be presenting our business model
to such a prominent group of potential investors.”
Verdanté Bioenergy Services Selected for CLT Joules Accelerator.
CLT Joules, which operated in 2014 with seven companies, has selected four new companies including Verdanté Bioenergy Services to participate in its 2015 Energy Accelerator program to fast-track the growth of promising energy ventures.
As Charlotte’s first community for energy startups, CLT Joules offers a space to learn, accelerate growth, and connect to the big players in the energy ecosystem. Energy communities facilitate the growth and development of early stage companies, which drive innovation in the energy industry. Currently headquartered in Lenoir, Verdanté is the first company located outside of the Charlotte metro area to be selected for the program.
“Part of our corporate mission is to bring energy innovation to our region and our local area. Being selected into CLT Joules is a step in that direction. This is not only good for our firm, but it opens the door for other entrepreneurs in our region to follow,” said David Waechter, CEO of Verdanté Bioenergy Services.
Lenoir Mayor, Joe Gibbons echoed, “It is a tremendous honor that one of the start-up businesses in our small town of Lenoir has been selected to participate in CLT Joules. Lenoir is a beautiful place to live and at the same time grow a world class business. Since we are only a short drive from Charlotte, businesses like Verdanté are able to be part of the fast-paced, growing hub of energy and banking in Charlotte.”
Waechter Presents Real Time Supply Chain Technology at National Conference
Produced by BBI International, this national event features the world of advanced bio-fuels and bio-based chemicals—technology scale-up, project finance, policy, national markets and more—with a core focus on the industrial, petroleum and agribusiness alliances defining the national advanced bio-fuels industry.
“It was exciting to participate in the high level discussions of how to improve biomass supply chains. My colleagues on the panel highlighted the key concerns companies like Verdanté are focused on solving,” said David Waechter.
